St. Mary’s Covered Bridge

Owner: Huntingdon County Commissioners Project Description:

Huntingdon County Bridge No. 8 is located on T-358 (Covered Bridge Road) over Shade Creek in Cromwell Township. The bridge is locally known at St. Mary’s Bridge since it’s across from St. Mary’s Church along S.R. 522.

The purpose of this project was to rehabilitate and preserve the only remaining covered bridge in Huntingdon County. Repair and stabilization of the existing bridge components with a focus on maintaining the historic character of this bridge made up the general scope for this project. The repairs were made using in-kind materials and detailing similar to the original structure.

Preserving the original character of the structure while replacing deteriorated members made this project challenging. An interesting component of this project was that the Keller Engineers’ Bridge Design team prepared main truss components to receive paint by chipping and sanding, but preserved the carved graffiti that in some instances was very old.
