Project Details

This safety improvement project enhanced the safety for those walking or biking to and from the Cresson area to the college campus. Prior to this project, there was no safe access from the college campus to downtown Cresson.

The new ADA compliant sidewalk runs adjacent to the southern side of Admiral Peary Highway (Route 22) from the college to the existing sidewalk at the Norfolk Southern Railroad overpass.

Project Uniqueness/Challenges

Some of the challenges of this project included: Coordination with the multiple businesses along this stretch of Admiral Peary Highway and limited ROW width required design to reduce the extra wide shoulder which narrowed the total roadway width in this section of SR 22. This solution also eliminated the need to lengthen a culvert crossing which also eliminated the need for a permit.

Keller Engineers has been the partnering Engineer firm for Bedford Joint Municipal Authority since 2009. Keller Engineers were a key component in every area from design to construction for the first phase of Shuster Way Heritage trail that was completed in 2015. Our partnership with Keller Engineers continued as we designed and completed the 2nd phase of the Shuster Way Heritage Trail in September of 2023.
